The Suzuki Method
The Suzuki Method, developed by Japanese violinist and educator Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, is rooted in the belief that every child can learn and excel in music when given the right environment. Often called the "mother tongue method," it mirrors the natural way children learn language—through listening, repetition, encouragement, and immersion. This approach emphasizes early exposure to music, parental involvement, and creating a nurturing, supportive atmosphere where students can develop their skills at their own pace. Beyond technical proficiency, the Suzuki Method fosters character development, instilling values such as discipline, perseverance, and confidence. At Varkki Violin, the Suzuki Method forms the heart of our teaching philosophy, inspiring students to grow as musicians and as individuals while cultivating a lifelong love of music.

"Norma Varkki is an incredibly talented teacher, who not only has exceptional skill, she can motivate even the most hesitant learner. Through her dedicated instruction of my four sons (all currently under the age of 14), I have witnessed them gain transformational life skills such as discipline, problem-solving, polish and performance, as well as, most importantly, a love of music. The confidence they have gained through performance skills and practice is advanced for their age, and has resulted in their participation in school concerts, public solos, and even playing at weddings. Norma’s attention to detail, constant encouragement, and diverse teaching styles have ensured each of my very different sons have achieved success and continue to strive for improvement. We are so grateful to have such an amazing teacher for our children!"Jennifer

"As a graduate of York University in music studies, I owe so much of my success to Norma Varkki’s exceptional teaching. She went above and beyond to build a solid musical foundation in me, instilling confidence and inspiring me to see myself as more than just a student. From the start, Norma encouraged me to share music through community performances, fostering my growth as a violinist and an active music community member.
Thanks to her guidance, I’ve gone on to teach private students, lead group classes, and perform professionally at weddings, parties, and corporate events. Today, I’m proud to play first violin with the York Chamber Ensemble and perform with the Lumina Duo. Norma's incredible support and expert instruction have equipped me with the technique and versatility to excel as both a soloist and collaborator across genres.
I wouldn’t be where I am today—both as a musician and as a person—without Norma’s mentorship. She is truly transformative. Thank you, Norma!"Lucy

"To anyone considering violin lessons I would highly recommend Norma!I began as an adult student and this has been a wonderful challenge! Norma brings skill, wisdom, patience and so much fun to the lessons. As a retired educator I am very aware of the multi focus teaching strategies that she brings to fun and engaging lessons- this matters from the perspective of learning. What is more exceptional is the smiling, the laughter, and how success is noticed and celebrated! Norma’s kindness and compassion to students young and old allows all to take on additional challenges (an all ages fiddle camp for this older adult beginner)! As a parent this is who you want teaching your child, as the love of learning music in a way that is safe, supportive and fun inherently teaches a joy in the instrument!"Vicki
